The name Datura comes from the Sanskrit dhattūra (“thorn apple”), while metel marks its South Asian origin. Rich in tropane alkaloids, all parts of the plant can trigger hallucinations, delirium, and respiratory failure. Its large, trumpet-shaped blooms mask a chemistry as dangerous as it is striking.
